Melanie Herbert - Hatha & Ashtanga Yoga Teacher
Hatha Yoga is the traditional style of yoga where the focus is on mindfully learning to bring awareness of the body and breath through gentle stretches, standing and seated postures and breathing techniques.  Most forms of yoga are derivations of Hatha Yoga - the teacher is free to incorporate different movements and postures as they wish, so classes vary from teacher to teacher and from class to class.

Hatha Yoga is a particularly good way to learn the fundamental aspects of yoga, or for rehabilitation after an illness or injury (of which you should always advise the teacher).  Beginners are therefore welcome at any Hatha Yoga class.

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and energetic style of yoga, where it is possible to increase flexibility and stamina more quickly than in a traditional Hatha Yoga class.

In this style of yoga, a set sequence of postures, known as the Primary Series, is followed in order.  All classes begin with a series of flowing exercises, known as the Sun Salutations.  These prepare the body to tackle more demanding postures which challenge us both physically and mentally.  The postures flow from one to another, linked together by movements known as Vinyasas.

Much attention is given to breathing techniques and ways to engage deep muscle tissue which increase core stability.  It is usual to get quite hot during the practice - this is encouraged and helps the body to detoxify.

Beginners are also welcome at Ashtanga Yoga classes, although it can take a few sessions to become familiar with the sequence and postures.  This is a popular style of yoga for those wishing to build strength and stamina and is an excellent complement to an existing exercise/gym regime.
